Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has labeled the Supreme Court as "brazenly corrupt and brazenly political" in a spirited defense of President Biden, who recently described the court as "out of kilter" during a fundraising event. The Hill Reports
In a CNN “State of the Union” interview, Murphy endorsed Biden's critique of the Supreme Court. He emphasized, “I think it would be irresponsible for the president not to talk about the fact that this court is becoming brazenly corrupt and brazenly political.” Murphy urged Americans to address this issue in the upcoming election, calling on Congress to enact an ethical conduct code for the judiciary "before it's too late."
This discussion arises amid growing calls for Justice Samuel Alito to recuse himself from cases linked to the January 6 Capitol attack and the 2020 presidential election. These demands follow reports that flags associated with efforts to keep former President Trump in power were displayed outside Alito’s home. Alito has rejected these calls for recusal.
One notable incident post-2020 election involved an upside-down American flag, a distress signal later adopted by Trump supporters protesting his loss and connected to the "Stop the Steal" movement. Additionally, in 2023, Alito displayed an "Appeal to Heaven" flag at his New Jersey vacation home. Originally a Revolutionary War symbol, this flag has recently been associated with calls for a conservative, Biblically-based government and was seen during the January 6 Capitol riot.
Alito defended his actions by stating that his wife decided to raise the flag, emphasizing her "legal right to use the property as she sees fit" and noting her fondness for flying flags.
Justice Clarence Thomas has also faced similar recusal demands due to his wife Virginia's involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Like Alito, Thomas has declined to recuse himself. Moreover, Thomas has been scrutinized for accepting luxurious gifts and vacations from billionaire Harlan Crow, as uncovered by a ProPublica investigation. This investigation raised concerns about Thomas's ability to remain impartial.
Murphy cited these instances as indicative of a broader issue within the Supreme Court. “I think there’s a crisis on the court, in particular with respect to Justice Alito and Justice Thomas. What Justice Thomas is engaged in is just a grift. He’s got a major political player on the outside, who absolutely has political and business interests at the court, paying off a justice,” Murphy asserted. He added, “Justice Alito is openly displaying affiliation with political causes in public.”
